About the book
Caring for our fellow humans with serious illness can be intense, gratifying, and challenging, clinically, operationally and emotionally. Some refer to it as a “calling”, others fell into it and discovered that they could manage the multitude of emotions that often exist. The joy and heartache that can come with navigating relationships with one’s patients, their caregivers, and their communities pulls those of us in serious illness care in a multitude of directions. Add to this what it means to be a good clinician, a good team member, a good advocate all while navigating systems of hierarchy, oppression, structural racism, and limited resources.
Our intention with this book is to create a space for us to pause, to reflect, to be in community. To give space to the very human interactions that stay with us, the ones that keep us up at night, that push us, challenge us and at times change who we are as clinicians and human beings. To express gratitude for lessons received, to mourn lives lost, to acknowledge where we may have been complicit, to see each other and those we show up to support through the door of humanity. All without judgement.

Who is the Book For?
Mirrors and Windows is a self published book written by a sampling of social workers colleagues who have influenced and been influenced by the profound work that we all share. Each reflection is 700 words or less and they capture experiences that touch heart, mind and soul. They are not idealized and are an invitation for others - students, colleagues, academics, administrators etc - to catch a glimpse of our work, joys and struggles. While written by social workers we know that many of the reflections will resonate with those who share the care of patients - docs, nurses, chaplains, child life, patient care attendants etc. at the same time that they provide a glimpse of our work.
